"Be Good": Spiritual Resources for Showing Compassion

"Be good, love the Lord, pray for those who do not know him. What a grace it is to know God!" - St. Josephine Bakhita

2.1 Spiritual Resources

“One day an aged beggar, covered with ulcers and almost naked, stretched out his hand, and Saint Martin took him to his own bed, paying no heed to the fact that he was not perfectly neat and clean. One of his brethren, considering he had gone too far in his charity, reproved him. Saint Martin replied: ‘Compassion, my dear Brother, is preferable to cleanliness. Reflect that with a little soap I can easily clean my bed covers, but even with a torrent of tears I would never wash from my soul the stain that my harshness toward the unfortunate would create.’"
(From Vie du Bienheureux Martin de Porrès, by Fr. Arthur M. Granger, O.P. , Dominican Press: St. Hyacinthe, 1941)

Celebrating Black History Month

Black History Month

The mural above was painted by Ohio high schooler, Chloe Becker, for several reasons: she wanted to focus on racism in the Catholic Church and strengthen the Church's voice against it, she wanted to more accurately represent Black saints who are often misrepresented in art, and she wanted to acknowledge that there present day saints among us (that's why she chose real life people, parishioners of a Cleveland church, as her models). Read more about Chloe's impressive mission and artistic process.
