The Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) has presented its TLS Outstanding Scholarship Award to Dr. Leanne Owen, professor of Criminal Justice, for her article, “The Impact of Feedback as Formative Assessment on Student Performance.” The piece was published in the International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, 28 (2), in 2016.

The TLS Outstanding Scholarship Award is presented in recognition of an outstanding article on teaching or learning in criminal justice published within the past two years.  Winners receive a plaque of recognition and are honored at the annual TLS meeting.

According to the ACJS website, “The purpose of the Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship (TLS) Section of the ACJS is to bring together Academy members to serve as a multifaceted resource to assist faculty, practitioners, students, administrators, and concerned citizens in their integration of innovative and effective teaching and learning techniques.”

In his nomination of Dr. Owen, Dr. Al Mueller, dean of the Division of Arts and Sciences, wrote, “Having been in your position myself in my own field, I know you will receive many promising nominations. The fact that a Communication scholar finds her article invaluable for his own pedagogical practices, I hope, will demonstrate to you and your committee that Owen’s piece is a cut above the rest.”
