Storytelling is a powerful means of communication. As mythology expert Joseph Campbell once wrote, “People forget facts, but they remember stories.”
Neumann University marks its 60th anniversary this year and, as part of the celebration, we are inviting alumni to share their memorable Neumann stories. The tales can be recollections of an inspiring professor, a career-defining internship, a campus ministry retreat, or a special season with a sports team. They can be memories of meeting a spouse or forging a lifelong friendship.
The cover story in this edition of Accent magazine explains how to participate in our collection of stories, which will be published digitally and in print in October of this year. The article even shares abbreviated versions of early submissions from those who, like many of you, proudly call Neumann their alma mater.
In keeping with the storytelling theme, this issue also focuses on the behind-the-scenes experiences of the championship men’s soccer team and the entrepreneurial tale of Aaron Krause, the CEO of Scrub Daddy, who delivered the annual Abessinio Lecture, endowed by Rocco ’79 and Mary Abessinio.
Of course, all of these narratives add to the threads that continue to be woven into the complex and evolving tapestry that is Neumann University. That tapestry tells the story of transformational Franciscan education and unwavering commitment to our core values: Reverence, Integrity, Service, Excellence, and Stewardship.
As always, we eagerly embrace this mission, based upon the belief that knowledge is a gift to be shared in the service of others, and anticipate the stories that future generations of alumni will tell.
