In sports, uniforms serve a dual purpose: providing functionality for the athletes wearing them and reflecting the identity of a team.
Recently, both Neumann University and Major League Baseball (MLB) have unveiled new sets of uniforms, each with unique features and qualities.
However, after further examination, and personal use, it has become apparent that even at a Division 3 level, the Neumann University Under Armour athletic uniforms outshine the MLB’s Nike uniforms in terms of material quality, practicality, and overall effectiveness.
The biggest difference between Neumann and MLB uniforms lies in the quality of the material used.
Neumann University’s choice of Under Armour fabric proves their commitment to providing athletes with top-tier performance gear. Under Armour is credited for its innovative materials that offer moisture-wicking properties, durability, and comfort.
These attributes are crucial for athletes who must perform at their best without being hindered by uncomfortable or restrictive clothing.
From personal experience, these new uniforms were breathable and comfortable, even under the high heat of Florida weather while competing in a softball tournament. The material does not restrict players from feeling uncomfortable and allows them to perform to the best of their ability.
In contrast, the recent MLB Nike uniforms have faced criticism for their subpar quality, particularly regarding their transparency.
Numerous players have voiced concerns about the see-through nature of the fabric, which was designed by Nike and produced by Fanatics, who already has a reputation for producing poor-quality fan gear.
In an article produced by Fox Sports in February, when pitchers and catchers began, they revealed, “St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas told reporters that the uniforms ‘look cheap’ while Angel's outfielder Taylor Ward said the jerseys feel ‘kind of like papery.’” (FOX SPORTS, 2/22)
Not only does this controversy undermine the professionalism of the sport, but also poses practical issues for players on the field.
A uniform should inspire confidence and instill a sense of pride in the wearer; however, these qualities are compromised when athletes feel exposed or self-conscious due to inadequate clothing.
Beyond material quality and performance, the Neumann University Under Armour uniforms are also notable for their attention to detail. Under Armour offers a wide range of designs and styles, allowing for all 23 intercollegiate men and women’s teams to create uniforms that reflect their unique identity and spirit.
The high level of customization that Under Armor offers allows Neumann University to showcase its unique shades of blue and gold. This allows for all NU Sports teams to reinforce their team identities and create a visual representation of their collective goals and aspirations.
In contrast, the recent MLB uniform designs have been met with mixed reviews, with many fans and players expressing disappointment in their lack of attention to detail.
Player names have become significantly smaller compared to past uniforms, and the MLB logo, once placed in the back center of the neckline of jerseys, has now taken an odd shift below the neckline of the uniform.
While tradition plays a significant role in baseball, there is also room for innovation and evolution, especially when there is an opportunity for a new uniform design.
While both sets of uniforms serve the purpose of representing their respective teams, the Neumann University uniforms stand out for their superior material quality, performance-enhancing features, and customizable design options.
As athletes strive for excellence on the field, they deserve uniforms that empower them to perform at their best, and Neumann University's Under Armour uniforms deliver on this promise.
