To reflect on this story, it is important to remember that this passage is preceded by the story of the disciples who were on the road to Emmaus. They met Jesus, finally recognized him in the breaking of bread, and then turned back to Jerusalem. As this passage begins, these same disciples are now telling the others about being with the risen Lord, whom they had not recognized. As they were talking, Jesus entered the room and they still did not recognize Him! The disciples were “startled and terrified, and thought they were seeing a ghost!”

How did Jesus respond? He met the disciples exactly where they were at. With full and loving presence, He reassured them of His peace. He showed them his wounds. He even ate a fish. When they were ready, Jesus “opened their minds to understand Scriptures”. He reminded the disciples that He is the complete fulfillment of God’s promise. He reminded them of their purpose to witness.

Often, we are so preoccupied and engrossed in our own stories, fears, desires, and endless thought streams, we fail to see and fully understand who or what is right in front of us. During this Easter season, may we remember to be truly present to what is happening, to recognize that Jesus is with us, and to take time to focus on the reality of His story, and our place in it.
