How often we confuse the words “college experience” for “partying.”
I once had a recruit visit me, wanting to go to school to get the “college experience.” My head did a 360 degree turn. In moments like this, I always enjoy the follow-up questions, especially wondering whether the recruit’s parents will agree or disagree with what words come next. Needless to say, the words that followed from the student athlete’s mouth were not music to my ears. And at that moment, I was strikingly optimistic that he should look into other great colleges in the area and what a great fit those places might be for him.
What if the college experience was different from what it is now? What if there was a different energy on campus, where we could express ourselves in a uniquely personal way in which everyone can partake? What if we could be part of a large group that makes us feel good about ourselves and at the same time develops school pride? What if there were events that helped us get away from the pressures of classes, homework and / or our jobs?
I think a big part of the college experience is supporting the athletic events in full force. Can you imagine if every game was like (the now once-a-year) spirit night? What if, at every contest, there were a cool 1,000 fans ready to rock the house, by cheering on their classmates? It would be as if the students were a part of each team that they support – and they have as much impact in the result of the game. Even better, what if the student body stood together, came up with chants, and belted them forth in unison for all of Aston to hear? Picture it: all of our fans, jumping up and down, singing “Here we go! Here we go! Here we go!” Perhaps we could intimidate opposing teams with mere strength in numbers. Wouldn’t the community come out to take part as well? Aston could shut down for the Neumann sporting events! What a site it would be as Zac’s Burgers, Dunkin’ Donuts and Walgreen’s all have a “Closed for the Game” sign because Neumann is playing at home!
We have the potential to be a small college town with a big school feel. Being a spectator doesn’t have to be boring while you wait for something good to happen so you can cheer for your team. If we can create this sort of popularity, we could be talk of the town – or the talk of Philadelphia – or the talk of the State. Heavens to murgatroid, we could be the talk of the nation (only in the good sort of way)!
The college experience should be when a large group of people come together to have a unique experience. Can we set a trend? Create our own niche? Singing and dancing in the stands? If they can make it happen in “Footloose,” why can’t we?!
