Clarissa Hayes, a biology major who will begin her senior year this fall, was one of approximately two dozen people who participated in a DNA Workshop at Cabrini College on June 19 and 20. Organized by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Consortium for Higher Education (SEPCHE), the workshop gave students and faculty members from the eight SEPCHE colleges the opportunity to conduct research with a scientist from the renowned Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York.
Clarissa, a native of Millville, NJ, who is currently studying for her medical school admission test, got experience in extracting and amplifying DNA and using gel electrophoresis. The group worked mainly with macro invertebrates during the workshop.
"It was a good experience," said Clarissa, "especially working with college faculty on a pragmatic scientific process." Drs. Rebecca Sullivan and Mac Given, Neumann faculty members, participated in the workshop.
