Kurt Nusshag, a former college soccer star and professional player, has been named the interim head women’s soccer coach for the 2024 season. Nusshag has served as an assistant coach to the team since 2022.

A Delaware County native, Nusshag attended Penncrest High School and East Stroudsburg University where, from 1998 to 2001, he was a four-year starter and two-year captain on the men’s soccer team.

The ESU team won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference league championship in each of the four seasons that Nusshag played and reached the 2000 NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Final Four.

After graduating, he was a member of the Reading Rage, a semi-professional team, for three years. His success with the Rage led him to play in Germany for SV Rodenbach for the next nine years.

“The European experience was everything I wanted,” says Nusshag, who finished his career at age 32. “The culture and support from the local community were great, and I was playing all year round. It was just incredible.”

In 2013, one year after leaving professional competition, he returned to Media, which is the home base for Nusshag’s business, Discipline ProjeKt. Through the company, he arranges and supervises physical fitness boot camps for groups and in-home personal training for individuals.

He describes his coaching style as “demanding and encouraging.” He understands the amount of work it takes to reach athletic goals and believes the current players at Neumann are up to the challenge. “The young ladies I’ve talked to know what they’re in for,” he chuckles.

“Soccer is a players’ sport,” he admits. “The work is done during practice, and the games should take care of themselves if we put in the work.”

His goal is to win an Atlantic East Conference title. “We don’t have a banner in the Mirenda Center yet, and that would be nice to see.”

Nusshag’s job at Neumann is full time and includes administrative duties – working with admissions to recruit students -- in addition to coaching.

He considers the job a good fit for his talents, based on his involvement with the university’s athletic programs during the last two years.

“I instantly said yes when I was offered the job.”
