Neumann University has been blessed once again by the generosity of others. In the past few months, two $100,000 endowed scholarships have been created to support the education of NU students. Interestingly enough, both of these scholarships have a connection to the Irish.

The first scholarship, donated by John and Joan Mullen, is in the name of Sr. Marguerite O’Beirne.  This scholarship will be awarded to a student who demonstrates a commitment to the university’s Catholic Franciscan values and is active in Campus Ministry, and preference will be given to a student who immigrated to the United States, much like Sr. Marguerite did when she was a young girl.

The first recipients of Sr. Marguerite O’Beirne, OSF Endowed Scholarship Fund will be selected this fall.

The Mullen family have long been supporters of NU and are very fond of Sr. Marguerite and her work with NU students. It is a mutual respect.

“I’m humbled and honored by the gracious generosity of John Mullen and his family. As an Irish immigrant, who grew up in the vicinity of John’s parents in the west of Ireland, this scholarship is especially meaningful,” Sr. Marguerite said. “Personally and on behalf of the students who will benefit, I express my deepest gratitude and appreciation.”

The second scholarship is from The Society of the Friendly Sons and Daughters of St. Patrick (FSDOSP) in conjunction with a grant from the Joseph P. Heenan Family Foundation. The name of this scholarship is Society of the Friendly Sons and Daughters of St. Patrick, Thomas Edward and Agnes Rita Heenan Memorial Nursing Studies Fund.

This scholarship will provide financial assistance to full-time undergraduate students majoring in Nursing. The first recipients will be selected in the Spring 2022 semester.

Gene McWilliams, vice president for finance and administration, attended the FSDOSP gala on September 17 and received the scholarship on behalf of the university. McWilliams, a long-time member of the society, was voted to the board and named FSDOSP treasurer during the gala.

Carrie Snyder, vice president for university advancement, credits the relationships that have been built through the years with the establishment of these endowed scholarships. Neumann University is now reaping the benefits of these relationships. 

“We are so grateful for the generosity of our benefactors.  Their philanthropic leadership will make a difference in the lives of our students now and for many years to come,” Snyder said.
