Connor Betts recently landed a job as an assistant producer/production assistant for the Preston and Steve Morning Show on WMMR 93.3. He still marvels at how things fell into place, all because of an internship he had while he was a student at Neumann.

“They saw the drive I had and offered me a position,” he said.

Betts began interning for the morning show during the summer of 2015 and continued on for another semester in the fall of 2015. He also became a member of the MMaRmy, a promotions group for the radio station.

The Preston and Steve Show is one of Philadelphia’s most popular morning shows. Being an assistant producer for the show requires Betts to start his day before the sun comes up. Some of his job responsibilities include overseeing the college interns and formatting the show’s podcasts. 

“Probably one of the highlights of working for the morning show was when I got to swim in a dumpster pool,” Betts joked. “I like that every day on the job is different.”

The 2016 Neumann grad is working in an industry that he plans on making his long-term career. “To have a job in a major market like Philadelphia and on a top-rated radio show is really a dream come true.”

He’s interested in learning more about radio both in the studio and on the business side. “Being a producer is my main goal but I would also like to work in promotions,” he said.

 While a student, Betts was involved with Neumann Media, WNUW and NeuVideo. He had the opportunity to videotape the morning show’s annual Camp Out for Hunger because of the University’s close relationship with WMMR. Neumann students worked the event which was set up in a large tent at the Xfinity Live parking lot in South Philadelphia. Camp Out for Hunger collects food and monetary donations for Philabundance.

According to Betts, it was the hands-on experience he received at Neumann University that best prepared him for his job at WMMR. He learned how to work at a fast pace and be ready for whatever may happen.

“Neumann prepared me by giving me opportunities to actually see and work a live radio broadcast. I had to be on my toes at all times,” Betts explained.
