No malarkey, Irish singer Charlie Zahm will usher in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration with a solo performance in the Meagher Theatre on Thursday, March 7. The concert begins at 1:30 p.m.
Zahm is a popular soloist at Celtic musical festivals and maritime and American traditional music events up and down the eastern seaboard and across America. A baritone, he also performs internationally and has been invited twice to sing with Scotland’s Black Watch.
Between 1992 and 2013, he recorded more than two dozen albums, including Stormy Winds Do Blow: The Maritime Collection, The Celtic Balladeer, and Recent Journeys.
Among other instruments, he plays guitar, banjo, mandolin, flute, tin whistle, and the bodhran. To educate and entertain audiences, he often sprinkles rare bits of Irish and Scottish history in his storytelling.
Born in 1965, Zahm learned to play the banjo, his first instrument, at the age of 14. After attending college, he toured in Europe and Japan with Up With People and has continued to play shows ever since, from large concert halls to small house concerts. In 2014 he traveled to Qatar to play on Memorial Day for the members of the US Military at Al Udeid Air Base.
The performance is sponsored by the Cultural Arts Forum at Neumann University. The Forum hosts a lecture series, workshops, and musical presentations to enrich the educational experiences of the university and the community.
Admission is free for students, faculty, and staff. Donations are welcome and will support the Dr. Margaret Mary Kearney student scholarship fund, which assists non-traditional students at Neumann.
