Twenty-three Philadelphia high school students are earning college credit this summer, thanks to a dual enrollment partnership between Neumann University and Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education.

The dual enrollment agreement is open to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who participate in the Snider Hockey program and maintain a high school GPA of 3.0. The full cost of tuition and books is covered by Snider Hockey.

All of the current students are taking “Introduction to Sport Management,” a hybrid course taught by Dr. Barry Person, Jr., a professor in the school of business who recently created Neumann’s new major in esports.

The course meets on Mondays at 6 p.m. from July 8 to August 19 with most classes conducted via online lecture. During each week of the course, students will have case studies, discussion questions, and homework to complete in Canvas, the university’s digital learning management system.

More courses will be available to Snider Hockey students in the fall, and participants can earn as many as 24 college credits, which Neumann will accept, providing the student earns a minimum grade of 2.0. Students may also transfer the credits to another university, which can apply them to core requirements or use them as elective credits.

“This partnership allows high school students in Snider Hockey to earn college credit at no cost to them,” said Francesca Reed, vice president for enrollment management and marketing at Neumann. “It provides a head start toward a college degree and reduces the debt that these students may incur to earn a bachelor’s degree.”

Neumann courses offered in this partnership require a minimum enrollment of 12.

This agreement is the second major collaboration between Neumann and Snider Hockey in the last nine months. In October of 2023, Neumann University received a challenge grant of $15 million from Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education to support the construction of the Ed Snider Ice Arena on campus.

The building will include two ice rinks, one serving as the home for Neumann’s ice hockey teams and another designated as the official home for Snider programming in Delaware County. The rinks will have seating for 750 and 300 spectators, respectively. Two classrooms and dedicated office space will support Snider’s educational programs in the arena.

The arena will also feature ten team locker rooms, training and treatment areas, kitchen and concession spaces, and a 7,000-square-foot lobby with tiered seating for campus and community presentations and meetings.
