The Neumann University players bring the award-winning drama Proof to the Neumann University stage opening on Thursday, March 12, at 8 p.m.

Written in 2000 by American playwright David Auburn, Proof follows Catherine, the daughter of Robert, a recently deceased mathematical genius and professor at the University of Chicago, and her struggle with her father’s brilliance and illness.

Catherine had cared for her father through his lengthy mental illness. Upon Robert's death, his ex-graduate student Hal discovers a paradigm-shifting proof about prime numbers in Robert's office. Catherine then journeys to find the proof of authorship for this groundbreaking insight. Throughout, the play explores Catherine's fear of following in her father's footsteps, both mathematically and mentally, and her desperate attempts to stay in control. The play won a Pulitzer Prize for drama in 2001 and the Tony Award for best play.

The Neumann University Players is the resident theater company of Neumann University comprised of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members.  For 30 years, the company was under the artistic direction of theater professor Terence Gleeson, who founded the group in 1984. He returns to the Neumann stage as an actor in Proof. The University Players produces two or more fully staged plays annually, selecting from a wide range of material including Shakespeare, musicals, and contemporary drama.

Performances run Thursday through Saturday, March 12-14, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 15, at 2 p.m. at the Meagher Theatre in the campus Life Center. The play is produced by Tariq Hamami and Ed Milliner, and directed by Will Steinberger. General admission is $10. Tickets for seniors and students with ID are $5.
