Alumni Impact Story: A Legacy of Giving Back: Yana’s Journey from Student to Supporter | Yana Tamba ’04

For Yana, Neumann University was more than just a place of learning, it was a place where she found unwavering support, and a community that believed in her.

As a refugee, new to the United States, Yana struggled to afford necessities like textbooks and meals. Unsure of where to turn, her instinct led her to ask for help. She will never forget the day she walked into Vice President of Mission and Ministry, Sister Marguerite O’Beirne’s office, overwhelmed and uncertain about her future. With a compassionate heart and reassuring words, Sister Marguerite assured her, “You’re going to be okay.”

All you can do is ask, and sometimes the answer will surprise you
- that lesson stayed with Yana long after graduation.

She recently contributed to the Pathway to Graduation Fund on Neumann’s Annual Day of Giving, ensuring students have the financial support to continue their education. Having transitioned from a demanding corporate career to a content creation role, Yana now has the time to focus on pursuits that are meaningful to her, including engaging with the Neumann community and attending alumni events. She hopes to use this time to impart the wisdom she has gained along the way to benefit others and is excited about the possibility of sharing her story with students in the future.

Neumann was more than just her alma mater; it was her home. She found her “tribe” in lifelong friends who helped her believe in herself and become comfortable in her own skin. Through the encouragement of professors like Dr. Mac Givens, who pushed her to refine her writing and speaking skills, Yana grew into the storyteller she always aspired to be. Today, her book, Twist of Fate, is available on Amazon.

Her advice to students and fellow alumni? “Enjoy and cherish every moment at Neumann. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and join different events.” Yana’s message to the Neumann community is simple but powerful:

Always remember where you are from and who are, wherever you go! What makes you, is exactly what the world needs.

Through her generosity and commitment, Yana ensures that the spirit of Neumann; one of compassion, opportunity, and lifelong learning, continues to thrive for future generations.
