What Can a Graduate Assistant Do?

Current Position: Graduate Assistant Hall Director, Housing and Residence Life
I chose Neumann for graduate school because of the small, family-like community. I grew up where family was the main source of support. After seeing how family-oriented Neumann was, I knew it was the school for me. This position has opened so many doors for me, both physically and spiritually. My love for people and culture has significantly grown.
I had the opportunity to learn about cultures other than mine, learn about people's lives, and have had the chance to influence others in ways they didn't know they needed. Before becoming a graduate assistant, I didn't realize how much I loved working with students. I thought I would never desire to work in student-facing positions. However, this has changed greatly. I am so thankful for this experience.
The Value of a Graduate Assistantship
Catriona Corrrigan
Alden, Pennsylvania
MS in Business and Organizational Leadership ‘24
Current Position: Library Graduate Assistant
In my first graduate assistant position, I was in athletics for a year and a half and am currently in the library for my last semester. In athletics, I was a building supervisor during the shifts that were difficult for staff to cover. This allowed the athletic staff to focus on their teams and seasons. I managed the building and assisted with game day operations, organized team rooms, and the hiring, training, and management of work-study students.
In the library, I assist with shelving, assisting students with any questions, upkeep of library spaces, and organizing events during the semester. I am hosting an event involving Information Literacy and what services the library can offer for other graduate students. This experience has me running around all semester, but has shown me that if I can be enrolled in a master's program, work two jobs, and play a college sport... then I can do anything!
My graduate assistantship has been a great opportunity to continue my education for minimal cost! Everyone at Neumann has consistently shown me the support that every college student deserves but would not receive just by being a face in the crowd at a large school.

A Graduate Assistantship Match Made in Heaven
Zay Snell
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
MS in Business and Organizational Leadership ‘24
Current Position: Graduate Assistant Hall Director, Housing and Residence Life
I chose Neumann because it gave me a sense of family when I came to visit. Neumann is the type of place where you can make your home away from home. I’ve always wanted to work on my leadership skills, and I’ve seen firsthand the type of leaders Neumann produces, so I felt it was a match made in heaven.
I get the chance to work with student leaders across campus to help improve the student experience for our residential students. Getting to work so closely with students and help them through any issues they may be dealing with has helped me find my purpose.
Pro Tip: Do your research! Make sure the program you're applying for is something you want to do and look in depth at the department you could potentially work for. Make sure it fits in some way what you want to do in the future.
