Neumann University recently announced the implementation of a Sustainability minor program. This addition, led by faculty Etsuko Hoshino-Browne, Jim Kain and Rina Keller, has been in the works since fall 2022. The committee proposed the minor’s curriculum in March 2023 and subsequently obtained the University’s Faculty Senate’s approval in April 2023.
This minor, formally titled ‘Studies in Sustainability,’ will require students to obtain a minimum of 19 credits. Two classes are required: Introduction to Environmental Science and Ecology. For the remaining elective credits, students are given a wide array of courses to select from. English, philosophy, literature, communication, political science and psychology are just a few examples of the topics included in the well-rounded curriculum.
Neumann’s Sustainability program focuses on a diverse range of courses to make the program suitable for any major. “We wanted courses not only in environmental science but in philosophy, theology, literature, political science, communications, culture, and we hope to add more,” said Kain.
Since the minor includes such a diverse range of options, it can be tailored to any major or student. Additionally, having experience and knowledge in sustainability is a skill that is becoming increasingly more important in the post-graduate job search. According to Hoshino-Browne, companies are demonstrating a need for employees with sustainability skills. “Studying sustainability will make students more competitive in the job market,” she said.
Sustainability has long been a key focus at Neumann University. Starting in fall 2021, Neumann partnered with Sodexo to offer a variety of sustainable implementations in the Bruder Dining Center. Some of these commitments include recycling fry oil, eliminating the use of plastic straws, composting food scraps, and using sustainable ingredients.
To many, it is no surprise that Neumann is initiating this new program. Sustainability aligns with Neumann’s RISES and Franciscan values. “This [sustainability] aligns with Neumann’s value of Stewardship and our Franciscan perspective on the sacramental essence of our relationship with nature,” said Kain.
The Studies in Sustainability minor will be offered beginning in the Spring 2023 semester. Professors and faculty are hoping students take note of the benefits this minor has, as well as gain a deeper understanding of sustainability and become more involved with sustainability efforts here on campus.
